Prospect Park

More Details: Prospect Park offers one of the best views available of downtown Providence from its lofty perch atop College Hill on Providence's East Side. From here you can see downtown hotels and other skyscrapers, the State House, and the splendid renovations and river relocation that have made downtown so attractive now. There is also a statue of religious freedom advocate Roger Williams in the park, who essentially founded Rhode Island for white Europeans more than 300 years ago. This is a worthwhile stop, very close to shopping and eateries on Thayer Street.
Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum

More Details: This very handsome and elegant Victorian mansion is a National Historic Landmark. There is beautifully maintained carved woodwork to see inside, along with colorful stenciling and finishes. People like to hold wedding receptions and other special events in the highly styled, grand and yet intimate rooms. The striking brick mansion sits on one of the East Side's busiest corners, so is very easy to find. There is also attractive statuary on the small grounds, including a spouting fountain. Admission is USD5 adults and USD4 for seniors, students/children.
Providence Athenaeum

More Details: The Providence Athenaeum is one of America's oldest subscription libraries and cultural centers. According to 19th century legend, the poet, Edgar Allen Poe, courted Sarah Whitman in the stacks of this granite Greek Revival structure. Since the original 18th- century construction, additional rooms have been added. In the Rare Book Library exhibitions of local artists and rare books are on display. The Athenaeum, located near Brown University is open year-round except weekends during summer. Annual membership fees are $25-$150.
Roger Williams Park Zoo

More Details: The winding sculpted paths of Roger Williams Park lead you on a safari experience where you can view over 900 zoo animals. Giraffes, zebra, cheetah, endangered lemurs, and an open-air aviary are just a few of the 156 different species. History buffs enjoy the Museum of Natural History, and the Betsy Williams Cottage with an authentic colonial American Flag, stitched, legend says, by Betsy. Carousel Village offers a Carousel, and pony rides. Rolling lawns make a lovely backdrop to paddleboats as they float among swans on a lily-pad pond.

More Details: Brown University is not only one of the world's leading universities; it is a very attractive landmark to tour on top of College Hill on Providence's East Side. With a mixture of architectures in its older buildings, from Federalist to Gothic, and pleasant greens, flowering bushes (spring and summer), libraries and snack bars, the campus is a must-see if you are touring Providence. A call ahead via Brown's information number might get you onto one of the guided tours conducted throughout the year.

More Details: Waterplace Park, with its adjoining cobblestone and brick river walks, is the jewel in the crown of refurbished downtown Providence. This 4-acre park is just a short walk to major hotels and restaurants, the train station and right across the street from the Providence Place Mall. It boasts a spouting fountain, located in the middle of a one-acre pond where everything from concerts, rallies and waterfire events are held. Accessible by boat or car, gondola or on foot this is a place to see if you are sightseeing in Providence.

More Details: You do not have to go to New York City's Rockefeller Center to capture the flavor of outdoor ice-skating and events. The Fleet Skating Center has 14,000 square feet of skating space. Concession stands and skating rentals are available in the 3,500-square-foot pavilion. The rink-side PrimeSource Gift Shop sells skating accessories and Providence memorabilia. The rink also converts into a roller blade arena during the summer months. Public Skating Admission: Adults USD5; Children younger than 12 and senior citizens USD3.
Providence Train Station

More Details: Amtrak serves Providence through this modern train station that commands interesting views of Providence the moment you step outside its doors. The front of the station faces the striking Rhode Island State House and the new Providence Place Mall, with easy access to Waterplace Park. Out the back door you catch glimpses of historic College Hill rising in the near distance. The station is walking distance to nearby hotels (but cabs wait too), and boasts state-of-the-art facilities like Cafe LaFrance, a gift shop, and automatic utilities in the restrooms.
First Unitarian Church

More Details: Destroyed once by fire and rebuilt in the 19th century, this striking pale stone and wood edifice attracts visitors strolling historic Benefit Street. The Gothic-looking spire rises tall above this corner of College Hill, with its handsome black-faced clock, and the church bells can be heard tolling through a portion of the East Side.
