More Details: What was once, in 1946, the Vanport Extension Center became Portland State College in 1955. It slowly accelerated from being a four-year school to a full-fledged university and an integral part of the Portland area. PSU is a highly recognized school around the country, not only for the academics, but also for the beauty and overall history of the campus. Performances at PSU draw quite a crowd and give visitors a chance to see plays, concerts, art exhibits and more

Or, you can take the convenient MAX light rail service that connects the airport to downtown Portland in approximately 38 minutes. The light rail station is located outside the southern end of the terminal near concourses A and B and currently costs less than $2. Fifteen major airlines service the airport with Alaska Airlines and its affiliated Horizon Air offering the most flights.

Heceta Head State Park
URL:
More Details: Home to Heceta Head Lighthouse, this state park offers everything from the history of this coastal beacon to sandy beaches. Trails around the mouth of Cape Creek offer incredible ocean views. The park's main path is part of a trail system in the Florence area, and a great place to view wildlife such as gulls and other water fowl, sea lions and whales. This is the beautiful Oregon coast at its best. Bring the kids or a special someone for a memorable day

Haystack Rock
URL:
More Details: This towering monolith is one of the tallest in the world. Rising 235 feet and sitting off the sandy strip of Cannon Beach, the mini-island is a product of one of the Earth's largest lava flows. A refuge for tide pool dwellers and winged creatures, treading lightly about the barnacled rocks is permitted, but any other climbing or hiking is completely outlawed. The Haystack's neighboring rock formations, the Needles, rest nearby.

Marquam Bridge
URL:
More Details: Built in 1966 and named for P. A. Marquam, a county judge, this four-lane, double-decker monstrosity is also known as the I-5 Bridge. The much-needed span is not one of Portland's prettiest bridges, but the view should not be missed. Get the most sensational panorama from the eastbound lanes. Keep your eyes peeled—at 55 mph, the scene practically flashes before you. And be careful: bridge traffic is often dense and dangerous.

Rebecca at the Well Shemanski Fountain
URL:
More Details: This city fountain, created by Oliver Barrett and Carl Linde, came to Portland in 1926 as a gift from Joseph Shemanski. With water, sandstone and bronze, its recreation of Abraham searching for Isaac's bride is captured with motion and grace. If you have your dog along, you are both welcome to have a drink. Shemanski, a local man, was a dog lover, and the fountain has two drinking platforms—complete with one for pooch.

Timberline Lodge
URL: http://www.timberlinelodge.com/lodge/lodge.asp
More Details: You will definitely want to come see this marvel where The Shining was filmed. The lodge was built with timber and stone from Mt. Hood and the 1937 structure is a national historic landmark. The smell and warmth of the fireplace soothe, while outside 40-foot winter snowdrifts and blowing winds make it quite an experience. Just steps from the slopes of Timberline Ski Area, the lodge is available for ski groups, events, meetings and parties

Ira Keller / Forecourt Fountain
URL: http://www.portlandparks.org/Parks/IraKellerFountain.htm
More Details: Flowing brooks and waterfalls make this fountain a downtown nature excursion. Designed by Michael Lawrence Halprin, the fountain was named for the man who brought urban renewal to Portland. Wading is permitted in most of Portland's fountains, and on hot days, you'll find youngsters and older people cooling off in the water. Situated across from Civic Auditorium, this Northwest oasis moves 13,000 gallons of water per minute and attracts businesspeople and families alike. The fountain makes a great meeting spot.

Council Crest Park
URL: http://www.portlandparks.org/Parks/CouncilCrest.htm
More Details: Known as the highest point in the city, this spot is where Native Americans once held council. It affords incredible views of the local mountains, the coastal range and, of course, the city. At the top of the hill, park your car and check out the educational plaques in the viewing area. This breathtaking spot showcases Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Make sure it is a clear day when you visit; a gray day means you will be in the clouds up here.

Ankeny Plaza
URL: http://www.portlandparks.org/Parks/AnknyPlz.htm
More Details: Before Pioneer Place, there was this plaza. The original center of downtown Portland, the plaza was alive with business and entertainment and had a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It got a facelift in the 1980s when MAX, the local light rail, made tracks. The square is busy on weekends now, thanks to the Saturday Market, a city flea market and bazaar. The square, complete with Skidmore Fountain circa 1888, still has a bit of an historic feel.
