More Details: Built in 1927, the Orpheum stage hosted the likes of W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Al Jolson. The entire facility received a top-to-bottom renovation in the 1970s. Today, it is home to Opera Omaha, the Omaha Symphony, Broadway touring productions and music concerts. In recent years, Jerry Seinfeld, the Phantom of the Opera, Annie and James Taylor have all graced the Orpheum stage. The architecture and design of this historic theater is absolutely breathtaking. Tours are available at no charge, just call to make an appointment.
Eppley Airfield

More Details: Eppley Airfield, located four miles northeast of downtown Omaha, is Nebraska's largest airport and gateway to the friendly Midwest. Nine major airlines including Midwest Airlines, Southwest, American, Delta, United and Continental operate at the airport offering nonstop service to 16 U.S. destinations. The airport consists of a two-level main terminal connecting to north and south concourses. Ticketing and baggage claim are on the lower terminal level and access to the gates and food courts are on the upper level. Passenger traffic at the airport doubled in the '90s, so the airport has undertaken several airport and roadway improvement projects to better accommodate this rapid growth.
Mormon Pioneer Cemetery

More Details: Landmarks and monuments pay tribute to the religious pioneers who traveled the 1,300 miles of the Mormon Trail. The route took the Mormons along the northern edge of Omaha. This site, known as the Winter Quarters, is a significant stop; it marks the pioneers' winter camp of 1846. The more than 600 Mormons who died here due to the harsh weather are buried in a nearby cemetery. Free daily tours detail this historic trek. Admission is free.
Malcolm X Birthsite

More Details: A historical marker points out the birth site of African American activist Malcolm X. His family left Omaha in the 1920s. Decades later, community leaders launched a crusade for this memorial, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places. His home no longer exists; however, a marker stands on land at his former address. Although there really is not much to see, history buffs will find this memorial site in North Omaha a nice side trip. Admission is free.
Great Plains Black Museum

More Details: This collection, complete with historical accounts and memorabilia, tells the story of how African Americans helped settle the plains. Displays feature rare photographs and artifacts. Visitors will also learn about the changes in African American life in the years leading up to, during and after the Civil War. The museum was founded in the mid-1970s. The building itself is remarkable. Designed by prominent Nebraska architect Thomas Kimball, it appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
Girls and Boys Town

More Details: This National Historic Landmark tells a story dating back to 1917. What started as a small home for troubled and abandoned boys has grown into a campus complete with a Hall of History, All-American Rose and Biblical Gardens, the Leon Myers Stamp Center and more. Visitors can even enjoy a bit of Hollywood: Spencer Tracy's Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan in the movie Boys Town is on display. Boys Town is open year-round. Admission is free. Guided tours available in June, July and August.

Heartland of America Park

More Details: Take a walk along the riverfront in this 31-acre park. Conveniently located in downtown Omaha, visitors will enjoy the breathtaking beauty of a lake and two fountains. The more modern, computerized Heartland of America fountain shoots water 300 feet into the air and features a colorful nighttime light show. A ride on the General Marion tour boat proves interesting, as well as fun. The ride costs just a quarter per person. Live concerts add to the relaxed atmosphere on Friday nights in June, July and August. Admission is free.

Walking paths wind through grassy knolls; lagoons and waterfalls offer a soothing soundtrack to a summer's day; and a sandy playground and horseshoe pit gives a welcome break to all the relaxation. Just a few blocks from the Old Market, it is a great place to walk off a heavy meal.

Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts

More Details: Three open, airy galleries dominate this warehouse-style art studio situated just south of the Old Market shopping and restaurant district. The building also serves as studio space and housing for artists chosen from applicants all over the world. The Bemis School of Art offers classes for budding artists of all ages. This gallery is also available for rent and is a great place to host a party or reception.
