Mississippi Fairgrounds Complex
URL:
More Details: Located just east of downtown at the corner of High and Pearl Streets, this sprawling expanse is used year-round for special events and popular commercial and state-sponsored functions. The Mississippi Coliseum, home of the Jackson Bandits, stands proudly on the grounds, as do the Mississippi Trademart (two agriculture and industry buildings) and the recently-built Multi-Purpose Arena, which is used for equestrian and livestock events. The oldest fairgrounds in the Southeast, the complex is home each October to the festive Mississippi State Fair, and each February hosts the Dixie National Rodeo and Livestock Show.
Smith-Wills Stadium
URL: http://www.minorleagueballparks.com/smit_ms.html
More Details: Opened in 1975, this comfortable stadium is home to the Jasckson Senators, the city's minor league baseball team, and also hosts various large-venue events throughout the year. The bleacher seats are so close to the action, you might think you are playing rather than watching. Special promotions are hosted throughout the season, such as Thirsty Thursdays, when all beverages cost USD1. Tickets for Generals games cost USD4 for general admission and go up from there based on seat location. Season box seats will set you back a mere USD275.
Tougaloo College
URL: http://www.tougaloo.edu/
More Details: Tougaloo College was founded in 1869, appropriately enough, on the former site of a Mississippi plantation. A pioneer in the education, training and enlightenment of former slaves, Tougaloo now stands as one of the most respected historically black colleges in America. Many of the campus buildings have been preserved and restored, including the impressive Coleman Library, which houses an extensive collection of Civil Rights artifacts and materials as well as a multimillion dollar art collection. The museum's collection of African-American artwork is considered the finest in the Southeast.
Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium
URL: http://www.ms-veteransstadium.com/
More Details: This traditional horseshoe shaped stadium (a.k.a. A.C. Butch Lambert Field) is the home of the Jackson State University Tigers football team and the famous Jaycettes. Besides the standard Saturday football mayhem, the 60, 492 seat facility hosts the high school state football championships. It is also the place where big name national touring acts play in the summertime.
The Clarion-Ledger
URL: http://www.clarionledger.com/
More Details: Founded in 1837, the Clarion-Ledger is the second-oldest company in the state, and one of the nation's few remaining statewide-circulated daily newspapers. Purchased by Gannet in 1982, this remains Jackson's chief source for daily news, and is delivered to most hotels and available at all area news stands. Tours are available at the site, or visit their Web site for a virtual, on-line tour.
Mississippi Crafts Center - Natchez Trace
URL:
More Details: Built and maintained by the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi, this facility along the Natchez Trace has offered exhibits and live demonstrations of area folk artists for more than 25 years. Of particular interest are the works of native Choctaw Indians, whose leather goods, pewter ware, and basketry are as functional as they are beautiful. On Saturdays, from spring through fall, Choctaw basket weavers, wood carvers, quilters and more are on hand throughout the day to demonstrate their skills.
Natchez Trace Parkway
URL: http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm
More Details: This long and historic roadway stretches some 400 miles between Nashville, Tennessee, and Natchez, Mississippi. The route served as a pathway for early Indian tribes in the area and was later used by pioneer settlers, traders and Colonial troops. Now maintained by the National Park Service, the Trace cuts through some of the most dense and beautifully preserved woodlands in the state. Picnic areas, campsites and historic markers line the Trace, making it an interesting and peaceful place for a Sunday drive.
